Comment: Plastic drinking straws have become a political wedge issue, with environmentalists and disability rights advocates at odds l niltiac

Surely it would be easy to just get rid of the darn things? For most of us, straws are a luxury.

We could argue the toss but I reckon we need to listen to people about the way their own bodies work and interact with the world. To insist that something is viable when the person with direct lived experience says it’s not is pretty gross. What’s the answer? The world needs to move away from plastics if we want a habitable planet, but it’s not fair if people with disabilities pay a greater price.

But long-term there’s an economic question to answer. Just say we shift the culture and we all stop using straws unless we truly need them. What then? We urgently need to develop materials that are as flexible, strong, temperature-resistant and as cheap as plastic, but are non-toxic and break down quickly in the environment. This would solve more than just the problem with straws. There’s a role for government because markets are efficient at solving purely economic problems, but intervention is needed when there’s market failure or to solve social and environmental problems.

niltiac Stews existed before plastic was known. Figure it out from there.

niltiac If your that reliant on a plastic straw bring your own and take it home.

niltiac Monkey see monkey do.... just wish we had their president...

niltiac Bamboo straws. Move on.

niltiac You can buy reusable straws, can wash those, I had a milkshake today with a paper straw, it held up very well, reminded me of the good old days.

niltiac People do realise it is not the straws but the individuals who dispose of them inappropriately that is the problem? You get that? It is another case of creating a “nanny state”.

niltiac I predict plastic toothbrushes will be the next battlefront...

niltiac We Baby Boomers managed in our childhoods with paper straws.

niltiac The dignity of the disabled being able to drink through a straw which is safe to use doesn't seem to matter to some environmentalists

niltiac Straws are a red herring: The US had the highest contamination rate, at 94%, with plastic fibres found in tap water

niltiac You would have thought disability advocates would have been over the moon with the NDIS. But no, they have to whine over friken drinking straws. So sick of this perpetual victimhood culture in Australia.

niltiac

niltiac Why do grown adults act so irrationally. Carers for disabled people can bring their own straws. It’s doesn’t have to be this hard.

niltiac Paper and or light card straws were used for years before plastic. I don't understand the drama. It's no different to single use plastic bags. There are alternatives easily available. The majors should lead the way on this. Ban them.

niltiac FFS, there are alternatives to DISPOSABLE PLASTIC straws. This is not an insurmountable problem.

niltiac so we can't have non-plastic straws? stainless steel, washable?. Non-story when you know country is burning
