The family of murdered Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane has lost a Supreme Court challenge over the decision not to hold a public inquiry into his killing, but won a declaration that an effective investigation into his death has not been carried out.
On Wednesday, just over 30 years on from her husband’s murder, the Supreme Court in London ruled that Mrs Finucane had been given “an unequivocal undertaking to hold a public inquiry into Mr Finucane’s death”, but that the “change of heart on the part of the government” was made in good faith. But the court also ruled that the de Silva review was not compliant with Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which required the investigation to be provided with “the means where, if they can be, suspects are identified and, if possible, brought to account”.
At a hearing in June, Barry Macdonald QC said Mr Finucane was a victim of “a policy of systemic extra-judicial execution that was as cynical and sinister as can be imagined”.
Lads, any chance you could take the “Irish” out of the title and represent who you truly are?
Are you obtaining your 'Sources' from Loyalists like DUP and UVF?
not the hardest of lies to uncover but this is what you will get if you do any google search. Telling blatant lies just to rewrite history. You would need a low opinion of yourself to work for this rag and call yourself a journalist. Fit for Leo's spin department only.
Irish Times Just can’t shake their historical backing for the British establishment. THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT LOST!
Finger on the purse, eh Irish Times? 😋
Lose? WTF? 'OK, just to be clear, we did NOT ask the UKSC to order a full State/public inquiry. We argued that (a) the Govt was obliged to investigate the murder & (b) that their efforts to date were inadequate. Unanimous agreement on both counts. 100%, not 50%.' - Pat's son.
RuthDE That headline will be annoying some people... even though it is correct, as the family did actually lose their case, but that reality will be lost in the propaganda spin.
Now can we have the half-dozen Sein Fein rape cases reopened, and a modicum of justice provided to the lady victims? There is a connection, you know!
BBC saying Pat Finucane murder: Judges do not recommend public inquiry
RuthDE Terrorist Pat Finucane, he was an active Provo no matter what bullshit SF/PIRA spew.
Odd how the Irish Times headline gets so much wrong here. What's up with the newsroom?
Will any future inquiry expose the extent to which Finucane was embedded in the PIRA and what involvement he had in their crimes?
