Eight years ago, then-British prime minister David Cameron reversed the commitment to hold a public inquiry and instead offered a review into the circumstances of the killing. Pat Finucane was shot dead in front of his wife and three children by loyalist paramilitaries in their North Belfast home 30 years ago this month. A retired Canadian judge, chosen by the British and Irish governments, in 2001 examined six controversial incidents, involving eight deaths.
Judge Cory recommended a public inquiry should be held in five of the six cases, including the Finucane death. In 2011 the British government decided to pull back from its commitment. Instead it offered a review of the circumstances of the murder by Sir Desmond Da Silva. The Finucane family were dismissive of what Geraldine Finucane called a sham. They took their grievance through the Belfast Courts and are now have their final chance in the UK system, at London's Supreme Court.
