Cardinal George Pell has arrived at the County Court in Melbourne for a pre-sentencing hearing after he was found guilty of five counts of historical child sexual assault. He has lodged an appeal against his conviction and has always strenuously denied all allegations against him. The Vatican says it will wait until after the appeal process before deciding what action to take.
The jury returned a unanimous verdict of guilty after a previous jury was discharged when it failed to reach a verdict. Pell, Australia's most senior Catholic, was convicted on 11 December after a lengthy trial.
