In a police interview played during his trial, George Pell professes his innocence and expresses disgust at being accused of interfering with children.

Victoria Police had no jurisdiction to question Pell, as a Vatican diplomat, outside Australia, so the interview took place under a negotiation in which detectives provided the Cardinal with a summary of the allegations. At the outset, Pell told Sergeant Reed he intended to answer all questions. In return, he expected to be able to give the detective a list of people that should be interviewed who"may be in the best position to demonstrate the falsity of the accusations".

"I have to rely on the law and my conscience which say that I'm innocent," Pell said. "I had nothing to do with the choir and I didn't know any choirboys in 1996. "The most rudimentary interview of staff and those who were choirboys … would confirm that the allegations are fundamentally improbable and most certainly false. "The allegations are the product of fantasy.

Anyone going to interview phoney Tony and get his opinion on George?

gregjamesbarton No sympathy whatsoever for the old rock spider. It’s the least he deserves. I’ll leave it to others to decide what he most deserves.

Hope he has a new hat packed.

Yes. Acts of paedophilia and their long-term cover-up by individuals and institutions are vile and disgusting.

FatherBob He's correct. His behaviour was vile and disgusting. And illegal.

As vile & disgusting as Pell be, the ABC is letting its own hatreds seep out, sad.

He deserves worse than his actions being described as 'interfering with'

abcperth Protected by the LiberalAus TonyAbbottMHR and the Murdoch media for decades.

Can someone at the court please ask former Channel Ten newsreader Katrina Lee is she’ll continue to do PR for Pell!

SBS auspol This will end up being what I call the two tiered justice system in Australia. Bloke down the road = Multiple years of prison dependent on how many offences. Famous/rich/elite = Little chance of prison. If imprisoned, small sentence in a secure, affable lockup. I live in the US now. Can you hear me screaming for joy from over here Georgey-poo?!!! 🎉🎉🎉😈💃💃
