When Paxton asked the Legislature to pay the bill, it led to an investigation, which many lawmakers said compelled the Republican-led House to vote overwhelmingly to impeach Paxton.
“If you’re a law enforcement guy, you don’t really want your witnesses testifying too many times, because it can create a trail that the defense lawyers can use to try to impeach them at a criminal trial,” Coggins said.Defense lawyers in the impeachment trial are trying to portray the former Paxton aides as jumping to false conclusions or having a political agenda.
The next day Vassar sought to walk back statements he made that the whistleblowers had no evidence of wrongdoing when they went to the FBI. Prosecutor Rusty Hardin asked him what proof they had.“My opinion was that our experiences were evidence. But we did not conduct our own investigation to provide documentary evidence of what we had come to learn,” Vassar said.
“Paxton may be finding out more details, more specifics about a future case against him,” Wilson said. “He may be seeking to have them commit to things that he feels might be favorable for him if there is a criminal prosecution.”
