The attorney general has used his impeachment and ensuing trial to ask for money from supporters. A previous fundraising email sent last month described the proceedings as “illegal” and “kangaroo court.” Paxton’s campaign ultimately had to remove that language to comply with a gag order,Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who is presiding over the trial, the state senators serving as jurors and the Texas House managers presenting the case have all vowed to not fundraise during the proceedings.
“The woke mob in Washington and the establishment puppets in Texas are attacking me like never before,” Wednesday’s fundraising email continued.Advertisement Paxton and his supporters have tried to paint the impeachment as a partisan attack against him. However, the former employees who have testified in his trial so far work for conservative legal groups.The fundraising email was sent out even though Paxton has largely skipped the trial. After pleading not guilty to the charges Tuesday morning, he left after the lunch break and never returned.
He remained absent on Wednesday as his former top deputy testified that he reported Paxton to the FBI because he and other former staff members believed the attorney general was engaged in “illegal conduct.”. Aarón is an Austin native who previously covered local government for The Kansas City Star and high school sports for the Knoxville News Sentinel. He is a University of Texas graduate, and Spanish is his first language.
