Here are some initial takeaways from Day 2.Mateer and other former employees reported Paxton to federal officials after they had repeatedly tried to get the attorney general to stop helping Paul.
“I reached the conclusion that Mr. Paul enabled him to engage in the conduct that Mr. Paxton engaged,” he said.Paul wanted the attorney general’s office to investigate what he believed was mistreatment by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies after theAdvertisement Mateer revealed that one of the two times Paxton raised his voice at him was because Mateer and other top aides had disagreed with their boss that the agency should hire an outside attorney to investigate Paul’s allegations.
Despite the staffers urging Paxton not to hire another attorney, House managers accuse Paxton of hiring Houston-based attorney Brandon Cammackto issue subpoenas on two financial institutions that were connected to Paul. Once he found out that Cammack had been hired, Mateer said it led to a “crisis moment” in the attorney general’s office. He then described how he reported Paxton, who had become a friend, to the FBI.
“I obviously failed at that,” he said. “Despite my efforts, the other deputies’ efforts, we couldn’t protect him because he didn’t want to be protected.”Mateer brought up Paxton’s alleged affair with a woman who, House managers allege, was later hired by Paul as a favor to the attorney general. Sen. Angela Paxton, R-McKinney, was in the chamber when her husband’s alleged infidelity was brought up.
