The puzzle of the week is Walter Sofronoff. How could the former judge have thought it was a good idea to share his, and rightly so, that the commissioner provided advance copies to two journalists who covered the inquiry before he handed over his report.
The ACT’s Inquiries Act says reports are to be submitted only to the chief minister, who decides when and if they are to be tabled in the Legislative Assembly. But which report? The one sent to some of those involved in the inquiry so they could respond to potentially adverse findings? Or Sofronoff’s final report?Barr seems determined to find out. Word is the government is asking those who might have seen a copy of a draft report, or been invited to comment on its adverse findings.
Call Hearsay a killjoy, but holding an inquiry would be futile. There would be a parade of people either denying a leak or refusing to reveal their source, and the last thing we need is yet another chapter in this long and sorry saga.
