Queensland's police force is set to commence a trial of a high-powered but 'less lethal' weapon never used outside of the USA before, with the state government hoping it will help boost community safety.

The state government will be rolling out a trial of Taser 10s for Queensland Police officers, with 65 units of the device to be distributed under the test run.

Queensland Police Minister Mark Ryan said the top-quality Taser 10s would boost all round safety for both the public and authorities – in a state that has the highest number of incidents across the country of officers having shot civilians. “The Taser 10, for instance, will provide an effective longer range, less lethal option to save lives and reduce harm to police and the community.”

Police said the attack was a retaliative one after the man “threatened” them, but the matter was later taken to an ethics enquiry.
