German court hands ex-Audi boss Rupert Stadler a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and orders him to pay a fine of $1.2 million over a diesel emissions scandal

In line with a plea deal, Rupert Stadler gets a suspended sentence and a fine at the end of his "dieselgate" trial in Germany, becoming the highest-ranking former executive to be convicted over the 2015 scandal.The 60-year-old resigned as Audi chief and a member of the Volkswagen board and has since paid the company some $4.5 million in damages for failing in his oversight duties.

A German court handed Stadler a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and ordered him to pay a fine of $1.2 million on Tuesday, some of which will go to charitable groups. The former head of Volkswagen’s luxury division admitted wrongdoing and regret for his failure to keep rigged cars off the market even after the scandal had become public knowledge.
