Ms Deeming was suspended and then ultimately expelled from the parliamentary wing of the Victorian Liberal Party after she attended a Let Women Speak rally which was gatecrashed by Neo-Nazis.
Speaking to Sky News Australia's Peta Credlin, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, Reem Alsalem, said"of course" she was “aware of Ms Deeming’s situation and what she has experienced”. Ms Alsalem said she understood that some Nazis had shown up to the Let Women Speak rally Ms Deeming attended, but also added “where's the evidence that she invited them or that she has expressed support for them?”
But Ms Alsalem said that “a small group of radical trans persons and their allies” who have “certain views on the scope of gender identity,” were attempting to “intimidate and threaten” or even “use violence” to “control the narrative” and “shut down any debate”.“We end up in a situation where we can't have this debate. And of course, it's very convenient then to brush everybody with the stroke of calling them Nazi, bigot, or genocidaire. It's a convenient tactic,” Ms Alsalem said.
