The Justice Department asked a federal judge in Washington state on Monday to clarify its obligations under an order that the Food and Drug Administration maintain the availability of the abortion pill in more than a dozen states, as it is at odds with athat halted the agency's approval of the same drug.
But Rice's decision came on the heels of a ruling from a federal judge in Amarillo, Texas, in a separate case involving mifepristone, which blocked the FDA's approval of the drug. Unlike Rice's decision, the ruling from U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk applies nationwide. Rice was appointed by former President Barack Obama, and Kacsmaryk was nominated to the federal bench by former President Donald Trump.
