Voice to Parliament to be heard ‘loud and clear’: SA Attorney-GeneralSouth Australia Attorney-General Kyam Maher says the laws of state and colony have “deliberately” disempowered and disenfranchised Indigenous people and by establishing a voice to parliament in SA will ensure it is heard “loud and clear'. “In decades and centuries gone by, the laws of our state and the colony that preceded it have done so much to deliberately disenfranchise, disempower and disadvantage Aboriginal people, today we use those laws to do exactly the opposite,” Mr Maher said during a media conference on Sunday. “South Australia now leads the nation by legislating for a First-Nations Voice, a voice that’s empowered to speak to the parliament – directly to the decision-makers who’ve so often struggled to make meaningful change, a voice that will help decision-makers create enduring, positive change for the future. “Friends, today isn’t the end of a journey, it’s the beginning, enshrining a voice to parliament in law is the first step in our commitment to the full implementation of the Uluru Statement From The Heart – voice, truth, treaty and we’ll deliver on all three.” “The Voice to Parliament will be heard loud and clear in shaping the approach to the tasks ahead – today we’ve lit a beacon of hope for the nation.” I thought the pre-federation colonial South Australia allowed Aboriginals the vote which was rescinded from 1901-67. Hardly colonial disempowerment. I bet he’s not specific in any way about the laws he claims are racist. Zzzzzzzz
