Walker spoke to Yahoo News about some of the key arguments and questions that came from Tuesday’s Supreme Court hearing and what the potential outcomes could be. “The Biden administration is using a statute [the HEROES Act of 2003] that was designed to provide relief from student loan requirements for military or other national emergencies. And it’s being used to kind of provide pretty blanket relief for tens of millions of individuals. So I think the court is looking at it saying, ‘We don’t think the Congress that enacted this statute would’ve thought this is what you could do with it, that there had to be a much more narrow target of relief.
“Yes, for sure,” Walker said. “The standing arguments in the second case of the individuals that hold loans [Department of Education v. Brown] are really, really weak and there was no justice that seemed to have any appetite in that. People rally for the student debt relief plan as the Supreme Court hears arguments in two related cases on Tuesday.
Why not pause tax collection instead of selecting a privileged class of people to benefit?
President Biden said he’s “not confident” the Supreme Court will uphold his student debt relief plan, after justices heard oral arguments in two conservative-backed lawsuits. A final decision is expected by June.
