The famous 'Crying Indian' PSA that used to run in the '70s to combat littering across America no longer has a place in society, as the new owners of the rights to the ancient ad say they're retiring it for good.

2/25/2023 3:08 PM PTThe old"Crying Indian" commercial that used to play in the '70s -- which was meant to be a PSA against pollution -- is never going to be aired again ... now thanks to its new owner.

As a result, KAB has given up its claim to the PSA at large and transferred ownership to the National Congress of American Indians, which says it's retiring all of the promos and will monitor to make sure it's never played without historical context. In other words, this won't ever be played unironically as a real anti-littering message ... like it once was for years.

The Hurtful trope and stereotype was that Humans are disgusting pigs and treat Earth like their own private trashcan, the saddest part is Humans Still treat the Earth that way, so after 50 years the Ad didn't help much.

Wayne's World 2.

Why? It should be shown today more than ever! Nothing has changed since then, it's only gotten worse! They should play this commercial over and over until it sinks in. I'd rather see it then all the other useless commercials they constantly show!!!

Appropriation makes the person feel insulted no matter what your race is obviously, so why don't we start respecting and loving each other instead of this constant state of hate?

This ad had such an impact on me as a young child I would always rant about not littering. Even my kids, born in the 90's know about this ad.

Actor Iron Eyes Cody was an Italian dude named 'Espera Oscar de Corti', of Sicilian descent. He kept busy in H'wood and worked with Bob Hope in 'The Paleface'.

That was a great ad. Simple but got the point across. Should anyone really care what nationality the man was? The ad worked….

Good, that guys not even an indian

A tear rolled down my cheek as I read this

I like how they wrote that whole article and never once mentioned that Iron Eyes Cody wasn't a real Native American.

Glad we can finally litter again.

We’ll back to dumping piss Gatorade bottles on the interstate

Wasn't that guy in Ernest Goes to Camp?

Axegrind00 He had a great message but he wasn't native american he was Italian 😎

You mean the Italian American born in Kansas? Iron Eyes Cody was a fake. Google is free

Land back

The guy that played the 'Indian' was Italian.

Are these rights in the room with us right now?

😂😂😂

He was Italian, not a Native American.

This dude is Italian.

So they’re racist against Italians?

Such BS

'Kingpin' did it better anyway:

Finally after 52 years !! I'm so tired of seeing this PSA on my TV. Say's guy who's still stuck in 1972.

Crying Indian reading this like

Didn't even know that ad still existed. Haven't seen it in years.

tmzLeaveBritneyAlone TMZisTrash

Rights to 'Crying Indian' ad to go to Native American groupAn advocacy group is retiring the more than 50-year-old anti-pollution ad showing a man in Native American attire shedding a tear at the sight of litter. The public service announcement has been painful for some Native Americans who saw it as a trope. East Palestine!!! That commercial stuck with me, I hate littering.
