An advocacy group is retiring the more than 50-year-old anti-pollution ad showing a man in Native American attire shedding a tear at the sight of litter. The public service announcement has been painful for some Native Americans who saw it as a trope.

NCAI plans to end the use of the ad and watch for any unauthorized use.

Dr. Jennifer J. Folsom, a journalism and media communication professor at Colorado State University and a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, remembers watching the public service announcement as a child. She applauded Keep America Beautiful’s decision as an “appropriate move.” It will mean a trusted group can help control the narrative the ad has promoted for over 50 years, she said.

And, it reminded him of time spent with his father, said Cody, who lives at Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico.

Get over it. I'm Irish hate the fighting Irish logo and leprechaun. It's an insult to me.

Lol.

“Painful”🙄

Does Elizabeth Warren now own 1/1024th of it?🤣

semissourian Cultural misappropriation notwithstanding, this was THE BEST PSA campaign on littering ever. Betting Gen X doesn’t throw trash around out windows, etc.

Glad that’s over. Now I can go out and litter.

It is a trope.

.99 CENTS on EASTER SUNDAY:

Church of Our Lady of the Eternal Victimhood

Wasn’t this guy referenced in the Columbus Day Sopranos episode?

He was not a Native American. He was an Italian American actor. They would've been better off having a Black child as an Indian. Because at least almost 90% of American Blacks are of Indian descent, but the government doesn't recognize it.

the issue is (iirc) its a white dude pretending to be native american, not any other aspect of it.

Thank you based Italian environmentalist.

I’d like to see the names of “some Native Americans” that are offended Maybe they are the ones needing remedial education

Progressives just keep removing all representation dont they?

What demo graph/areas in the US litters the most?

It should read GROUPS, there r more than one native american group

Iron Eyes Cody’s ancestry was far from being one of America’s original inhabitants, Cody was the son of two Italian immigrants, Antonio DeCorti and his wife Francesca, nèe Salpietra, who had come to New Orleans around the turn of the 20th century.

'for some Native Americans who saw it as a trope' Dude was a Sicilian American from Louisiana who managed to trick every other white person into thinking he was Native American with just a little buckskin and greasepaint

Iron Eyes Cody

Iron Eyes Cody was actually 100% Italian American but played Native Americans all through his movie career.

I understand it was a trope now, but as an eight-year-old I was profoundly influenced by it. My father taught me that Native Americans revered nature and we should do the same. I'm sorry we couldn't listen to narratives from actual indigenous people.

Misinformation this guy was a fraud he is from Europe. Nice try.

This ad made an impact on me! I respect Native Americans and we need an ad like this today to stop littering!

(Some folks'idea of progress) It only took 50 years to change this🤦🏾‍♂️

That’s because they want to see it that way. As a young kid when we saw that commercial it actually made a difference in the way we behaved regarding litter. To this day it still has an influence as I teach the new generation of campers & outdoors enthusiasts.

Really, take a look where most of them live.

I thought it was a great compliment to the Native American culture.

This is a good public service announcement that has withstood the test of time.

So he wasn't sad you all are litter bugs? Well I am. 😥

Chief Iron Eyes Cody was not actually an indigenous (Native) American. He was an Italian.

His name was “Iron Eyes Cody”.

Everything is sad and offensive to everyone. Does that cover it?

When this ad was first released, it was a much different world (early days of environmental 'awakening' in USA), and it made its point quite powerfully. I remember a bumper sticker from that era: 'Custer Wore Arrow Shirts'--a play on both the shirt brand and the Little Bighorn.

It was designed to be painful for AMERICANS. The United States Constitution is INDIAN LAW. The government has screwed us all.

I think he was also a 1/4 Jewish.

Mr. Spok is alive.

Spock lives.

That was one of the most effective ads ever. Every kid remembers that.

Funny how it impacted kids in the day and now how it impacts the emotionally weak adults today. pathetic

Commercials and names like 'indian' are painful? So much for 'brave' to identify some.

So white women told native Americans another thing they should be offended about?

The continued erasure of Native American Indians being portrayed as some kind of 'progress' really astounds me.....

The native Americans with blue eyes are offended

professor told our environmental communications class that this ad was offensive bc native americans were not actually environmentally conscious & referenced the practice of buffalo jumps to make her point this was 2011 ish

I haven't seen this ad since 1986.

Really? I always thought highly of it.

Not to mention the actor is Italian.

There are still cowboys and Indians that dress accordingly today

Have you ever seen what an Indian reservation looks like? Get real

When was the last time that advertisement actually aired? And what was the discrimination part of it?

mbieseck Dang, Aunt Jemima, the Land-O-Lakes native American buckskin woman, the so-called tropes sold food and brought more interest into the plight of marginalized communities and the canceling of such images is nothing short of cultural genocide.

You'd think they would like it since it played a vital part of cleaning up America.

Simpsons version was funnier

Keep rehashing racism you’re all garbage !!! media propaganda!!

So they are giving the native Americans another thing worth nothing and useless. Figures.

As deceitful as it was, the ad was enormously successful in fighting the desecration of Mother Earth. But then, most advertising is deceitful.

Trope, although I have no idea what it means, it is the reason I don't litter to this day, I was 6yrs old when I saw this ad. It was very powerful. Instead of crying over people littering I cry over missing indigenous females. Now I'll look up the word trope.

👍👏👏🙏✌️

I thought it was a good commercial and I also happened to like woodsy the owl. Hoot hoot don't pollute. In the commercials but pitch in throw your garbage in the garbage can.

Iron eyes Cody is Italian

I always saw it as look what you're doing to the land you stole from us.

😢 🌎 Better?

I haven’t seen this ad for about 40 years.

I’m sad to see this ad go because it had a huge impact on me as a child. I never littered and was appalled by people who did. Nevertheless, Native Americans feel stereotyped by the ad, so I support their decision to retire it and replace it with something more appropriate.

While I understand how offensive that can be to the Native People- I can only say this ad when viewed as a kid really helped me understand how much we were damaging the environment through littering.

This is ridiculous. there was nothing demeaning of the ad. it wasn’t harmful. wish they played it now as trash is Everywhere it was Highly impactful. the actor is part italian and part native american.

Before Rachel Dolezal, there was Iron Eyes Cody

Wow, Liz Warren sure is looking better!

Iron Eyes Cody is a National Treasure. To remove him is Racist!

Look at all the crying over retiring a depiction made nearly 50 years ago that no one thought of again until they saw this article. Babies are tougher than these whiners.

He looks like Livia Soprano in that picture

Is this not the ad where it was an Italian guy pretending to be a Native American?

I think the Sopranos had this story line...

Wait, so you can identify as one of the 43124 genders but you can’t identify as an Native American Indian ?

I always found this ad moving and it did impact me and how I view the land. The purpose and success should supersede the feelings of those who found it offensive because of the actor. Maybe we should retire Shakespear and turn back over all representations to the English?

Yes, we've all seen the Sopranos.

Another much loved character tossed away due to political correctness. Now we’re crying.

Hmmm …it was effective in making me concerned about littering as a child. I’d say it was a good thing.

LOL....is there anything left that ISN'T a trope?

About time they removed it!

Say what you want about this ad campaign (and I’m not saying that it didn’t depict native Americans in a very prejudiced way…), but it was effective for us kids of the 70s… I have often cited this as the genesis of my 26+ career in environmental protection…

how can you 'retire' something etched in the public consciousness? “There’s no agency for that sad so-called Indian guy sitting in a canoe, crying,” It's seemed pretty implied he was a kind of a time-traveler —not a real person.

Yet not American Indian... 🤔

Hilarious

Now this is what I call hard hitting journalism.

EASTER SUNDAY:

Me reading this rn

🙄

And the guy who played the Native American was actually Italian and not a native person.

From now on, only show inanimate objects in advertisements.

it was powerful. I can attribute my never littering directly to it.

White people will always be offended on your behalf

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

“It doesn’t offend me so that means they’re overreacting.”

He was Italian. He lied his entire life.

Wait til they see the McDLT styrofoam container !

One of the best campaigns ever. Brought attention to pollution problem that barely exists today. I’m calling BS

Get Real!

I don’t see it as a trope. My Great Grandmother was a member of the Blackfeet Nation and I’m proud of my Indigenous heritage. If anything, the ad reminded people of the continuing pillage and destruction of this land by colonists.

I wonder if they ever thought of asking any Native Americans how to make a relevant anti-pollution commercial.

So the dude was not a Native American and that makes it offensive? Stupid

If reports are correct, that actor was actually Italian

New spot: A TV is playing the old spot. Camera pulls out. Native American is watching. Cries.

In my opinion. The most effective TV ad in my 54 years on many levels. Hate and stereotypes never crossed my mind. Apparently, those few that are complaining completely missed the point. Maybe they should focus on their own trash before casting their garbage

Did ya read the part: 'has done damage to public perception and support for actual Native people'? Omg.

And he was a fake indian, just like SenWarren.

“Some” = two “activists” on twitter.

Why because white liberals have nothing better to do? Just like the Washington Redskins had nothing to do with Native American. Just cringe white liberals.

retiring? who has even seen this ad in 40 years?

This man is Italian

Does the world have no real problems to solve?

Iron Eye Cody may have been a Native, but he definitely wasn't an American Indian. There is a difference!!!!! Just like whyte Jesus they have to show u an indoctrinated depiction to propagandize ur mind and subvert the true image of what an Indegenious American look like...

While well done it really was a slap in the face to Amer Indians to hire an Italian American named Oscar Corti to dress as an Indian because he played the character in a Bob Hope movie.

An article about a 52 year old commercial that nobody has seen since or ever. 😐

Oh my God. 🙄🙄🙄 People are softer than baby shit today. Offended by an anti littering ad?

That was actually a good ad and gave respect to American Indians. Woke is a cancer.

Iron Eyes Cody was actually an Italian (not Native American).

It last aired when I was ten so WGAF

Qmoodo He was Sicilian, not Italian. In any case, he really believed that he was who he played in the movies. There’s an interesting segment on him in the film Reel Injun. Tbh, I didn’t know he was Sicilian before I saw that documentary.

If you think they cry over littering, you’ve never been to a reservation. This is false advertising.

Catering to the vocal minority as always. What’s wrong with an indigenous person being upset over pollution?

Wasn't the guy who play the Indian an Italian...

so he was really just a hippie

'painful' holy crap

That's because they know they're some of the worst litter-bugs on the planet.

As a child seeing this commercial it did indeed have an impact on me not to pollute

Thankfully, Chief Notaninjun has stepped up.

“This harmful trope caused people I don’t even know to think I gave a shit about the environment when in fact I do not.” - someone in Oklahoma probably 🤷‍♀️

Omg no!!! I watched that commercial as a child and it's the reason I NEVER litter. I felt that mans tear in my soul! True story.

He was Italian.

Well, he was Italian after all…..

It was a statement 'look what became of our land.' Made by your types. And the actor is first generation Sicilian. Trump invited Native chiefs to the negotiating table re mineral use on Native land and day 1 Biden reversed that suckit

Nope that was an Italian man.

Well, the AP is painful for Americans with IQs above 80. We should get rid of it too.

He was an Italian guy. Democrats used him to mislead the public for decades 😂 The climate agenda is just as dishonest as every democrat agenda. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Every time I saw this ad i would just chuckle. If you’ve ever been on a reservation in the west you’d know what I mean.

A 'more than 50-year-old anti-pollution ad' that no one under 40 even remembers seeing🤷‍♂️ ...Who cares about this other than people with nothing better to complain about?

Which is ironic considering the amount of trash that left on the reservations by inhabitants.

Get a grip.

White liberals don’t like to look at things that make them feel guilty so they just act like they don’t exist. Snowflakes!

Name one person who experienced pain, actual cognizable harm. You said that there are several. Just one name and details

I hope everyone will be ok.

Trope as thought crime. Do you people ever hear yourselves talk?

This ad made me an environmental advocate. It was life-changing. I cleaned up our turnpike area of all litter in 1976 with a friend. It stayed clean for years.

That ad always brought tears to my eyes not only of what we have done to the earth but also what we did to the native Americans.

I guess the second best litter campaign PSA will come under fire now for its portrayal of rednecks.

Well they're being absurd. It was a sign of strength and compassion.

I thought they retired this ad decades ago. I hadn't seen it in forever.

what about the ones that liked it and didnt care? do they count?

He’s Italian

Italians are the best native Americans

When this came out I was deeply moved by it. I don't understand how caring about nature is considered a negative attribute. So, Native Americans don't care about nature & it is a lie to indicate they do? We should all care about it without falling for the green globalism hoax.

I haven't seen this ad on TV since the 1970s yet it's a problem in 2023?

Get over yourself you weak minded simps

So, are you looking at the mask littering now? Just checking

Efforts to whitewash America seem a little contrary to the woke agenda, but advocates know best or something.

LOL. Can't even pretend they're noble environmental stewards without somebody getting butthurt.

It was a very powerful ad

Oh ffs!

Iron Eyes Cody was an American actor. He was recognized for portraying Native Americans in Hollywood films. Near the end of his life, his Italian ancestry was made public. In 1995 he was honored by the Native American community for his portrayals. We all suffer when racism wins.

Now I can litter guilt free. Huzzah!

Um, not all tropes are bad? 'Native Americans care about the environment.' This is defamatory? 'Jews highly value education and emphasize family.' It's a trope but not negative? Drunken Indians is a negative trope. Bloodthirsty savages is a negative trope. Those can go away.

Finally, now back to littering

It was only painful for the Associated Press.

Oh look, erasing yet another POC. Land-O-Lakes is LOLing.

No, it offended some woke white women.

I'm sure we can get a (insert slew of diversity points) person to cry about climate change and it will be SO effective an ad!

What a nice ITALIAN man. Get this shit out of here. Next time try to find an indigenous person at least.

Bullshit

Wow. I thought it was one of the most powerful ads ever made!

That ad is seared in my 1970’s Gen x memory. Sorry to hear it offended Native Americans because it was the most impactful ad for not polluting the earth ever made.

I met Iron Eyes Cody in first grade when he came to my elementary school.

Yes, it was a trope. Yes, the actor was actually Italian. But that trope made the young me (white, from a small-town in the Midwest) sympathetic to Native Americans and an advocate for the environment. So it was a good ad. A noble ad. An effective ad.

Cancel Culture cancels an American Indian.

It was effective though.

Maybe it is a trope, but it was honestly something White America admired about Native Americans. And, it isn't like N.A.'s don't care about the environment as well.

drive through an indian reservation though and there is trash everywhere lol

How is it a trope? Legit asking. No one in the article explains that

So ridiculous… he was was Italian.

That was the moment when the plastic industry passed the clean environment problems to consumers

the ad was garbage

That commercial stuck with me, I hate littering.

East Palestine!!!
