A justice system that allows a man to be sentenced to death for stealing N57,000, while those who looted public treasuries are allowed to walk free, needs a swift overhaul,On January 28, 2013, an Abuja High Court exposed the hypocrisy of the Nigerian justice system when it sentenced one John Yakubu Yusufu, standing trial on charges of stealing N32.
Then in April 2022 when President Muhammadu Buhari granted state pardon to Joshua Dariye and Jolly Nyame, former governors of Plateau and Taraba states who had been convicted for stealing N1.16 billion and N1.6 billion respectively, from their state treasuries while they were in office between 1999 and 2007, a human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria , Mr. Femi Falana, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to free all prisoners who had been jailed for stealing.
While the rich thieves continually get slapped on the wrist, helpless Nigerians were shocked a few days over the mind-boggling death sentence passed on a 32-year-old vulcaniser by an Ikeja Special Offences Court presided over by Justice Mojisola Dada for stealing N57,000. For robbing a nurse of N57,000 Justice Mojisola Dada sentenced Chidozie Onyinchiz, to death by hanging.
“The totality of the evidence before the court is compelling and I find the defendant guilty of the charges preferred against him. He is hereby sentenced to death by hanging and may God have mercy on his soul.” Daily, people are randomly arrested and hauled into overflowing prisons for ridiculous reasons, while known criminals are left alone. This group of persons constitutes the greatest number of Awaiting Trial Inmates across the country. Ola, a panel beater who recently regained his liberty after eight years in prison for failing to stop suspected criminals being pursued by soldiers in Lagos, was one of those unfortunate Nigerians.
If it is at home point, they it is a serious crime that may attract death sentence.
What a country
A country, two justice system, one for the rich and the other for the poor
Read the details of the story. The person collected that money and killed the owner. They only made the news catchy.
The owner of 'Thisday ' = among those who looted .
yomiable That is nigeria for you
The law is explicit. If one steals 57,000 naira at gun point or with instrument of violence,he/she goes for armed robbery. If done through pen/paper it's white collar crime, if forgery isn't involved, it's lesser felony. Choose ur crime.
Welcome to NIGERIA a place where Senior criminals are left to walk freely.
One country, tow justice system, one for the rich and the other for the poor
One country, two systems
The ruling 'elites' in Nigeria have taken absurdity to a new low probably never seen before in any decent society.

ChidiOdinkalu IT DEPENDS ON THE ACCUSED 'PROFESSED' FAITH ▪︎CHRISTIAN.? ▪︎MUSLIM.?
ChidiOdinkalu The sad reality of our justice system in Nigeria. It is a system that strives for corruption and so it seems to protect and defend the more corrupt and thieving elites. Justiceforall
There is two tribes in nigeria the cabal (structure) tribe and the masses tribe(no structure) each of this tribe succeed or fail as a group together if for any bigotry religious or ethnicity if one allows the other to use them the other one will suffer subjugation/injustice
The judiciary is the problem of Nigeria. Lawyers pass judgement according to their emotions and judgement is sold to the highest bidder.
femifalana_SAN DeleFarotimi
They believe Nigerians can do nothing because they are nothing but trash...
True talk
How about your Chairman s Dasuki Gate involvement? Pot calling Kettle black.
I am not surprised with this development due to the fact that the rate of corruption is growing up so fast that it's becoming a corporate and welcome development in our society.
Like a tale of 2 cities.
Do we have a functional system meanwhile Nigeria is not owing Judiciary legislators n Executives they are all paid for destroying d system
The thieves and cultist in the bench now is at alarming rate...first target for scrutiny should be NJC which is now a syndicate criminal organisation.
Good morning grandpa, how are you this morning?

A thief is a thief , both biro and goat stealing
Absolutely right
It will end this year
You don't get it . In court , Judges listened to arguments/technicalities not tears or sympathy. Corrupt people are rich and they can hire good lawyers to defend then while poor hire any how lawyer. It is everywhere in the world.
