Krysta Grimes stands in the dock at Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court in St. John's as Justice Vikas Khaladkar enters the courtroom on the third day of her trial, Friday, Jan. 13. TARA BRADBURY • THE TELEGRAMST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The complainant in the sexual exploitation case of Krysta Grimes took the witness stand in St. John’s Friday, Jan. 13, testifying he was 16 when he and the teacher arranged through SnapChat to meet and have sex.
They never made plans to meet again, but kept exchanging messages until one morning the next December, when Grimes texted him to ask if he had heard from his parents or the school about their relationship. After that, he said, they deleted each other as social media contacts and wiped their text messages from their phones.
The complainant told the court he had been aware of rumours circulating at school about Grimes having sexual contact with students, and agreed on cross-examination by defence lawyer Rosellen Sullivan it was a widespread goal among the teenage students to connect with the substitute teacher on SnapChat for that reason. He said he had initiated the SnapChat contact with the intention of seeing how far he could push the interaction and had told his friends about it.
