Breaking: The driver who struck Saanich teen Kaydence Bourque, resulting in his death last year, has been charged under the BC Motor Vehicle Act. Mary_Griffin_ has more on CHEK News at 5 right now.

One year after 16-year-old Kaydence Bourque died from being hit by a car in a marked crosswalk in Saanich, CHEK News has learned the driver who struck him has been charged.

Kaydence got off a bus and was walking home the night of Dec. 6, 2021 when he was struck in the crosswalk on Cedar Hill Cross Road at Merriman Drive, no more than 30 metres from the front door of his home. His mother, Crystal, then issued a heartbreaking statement saying she had never felt such pain in her life and didn’t know if she would ever recover.

That plea worked, with the district adding better flashing lights and bollards to slow traffic on Cedar Hill Cross Road. But some advocates say Saanich needs to go even further.
