Michelle Frey, forensic pediatric examiner, could not believe it when Dante Mullinix, 2, was brought in unresponsive days after she had evaluated him for herpes.

The York County Courthouse on Dec. 7, 2022.“Please tell me this isn’t the boy. Please tell me this isn’t the boy we just saw.”

The boy was brought in Sept. 2 by Leah for painful sores on his penis that weren’t being treated by his mother. Prosecutors accuse Bowie of choking Dante, slamming him, and other abuses of the toddler while watching him on Sept. 6. Bowie previously had not seen the boy in a week. Trauma maps, which are photos of people with wounds and injuries drawn overtop, occupied much of testimony Wednesday. Frey documented and presented jurors with the extent of Dante’s injuries on a Sept. 2 map, and one representing the boy’s condition on Sept. 6.On Sept. 2, Dante had a bruise on the right-hand side of the top of his skull, bruises toward the base of his spine, a bruise on the inside of his left thigh and bruises on the inside of his left elbow, according to Frey.

On Sept. 6, Dr. Barrett explained both Dante’s lungs showed signs of damage, which is indicative of infection or bruising.
