GSK's share price rose 13% in a day after a court ruled the world's previously best selling drug, Zantac, doesn't cause cancer

First launched in the UK and Italy in November 1981 and in the United States in July 1983, Zantac became the world's best-selling drug within five years, catapulting Glaxo from 25th in the ranking of global drug companies to second.

But by 1995, Zantac's patent protection was starting to fall away in some territories, while rival products such as Losec, developed by UK rival Zeneca , ate into its market share. The US Food and Drug Administration launched an investigation and shortly afterwards Sanofi withdrew Zantac from sale.
