Nova Scotia's Progressive Conservative government pushed a number of bills through final reading Tuesday, with the main piece being the bill putting a cap on a portion of Nova Scotia Power's requested power rate hike.

“Now is not the time to seek higher profits,” Rushton said in his statement to the House. “Every other company in Nova Scotia is doing what it has to do through this hard time. … We expect no different from Emera and Nova Scotia Power.” During debate, opposition members generally supported the intention of giving Nova Scotia power users a break on rate increases but questioned what it will mean for rates two years down the road as well as the capability of meeting green power goals.

Liberal Leader Zach Churchill supported the bill because of the short-term savings but also had some concerns, particularly with the impact it may have on the renewable projects. NSP has said it will not be able to continue with the Atlantic Loop project, which will connect the Atlantic provinces to hydroelectric generation systems in Quebec and Labrador.

Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin, an independent MLA representing Cumberland North, said imposing the cap on NSP doesn't engender good working relationships.
