Uber broke the law when it penned a controversial deal to make the United Food and Commercial Workers union the “official representative” for drivers and couriers, a new complaint lodged at the provincial labour board alleges.allows UFCW to represent Uber drivers in employment disputes but doesn’t provide workers with the full rights they would receive as formal union members.
The new labour board complaint, filed on Sept. 15 by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers , alleges that Uber’s “preferential” treatment of UFCW unfairly denied workers the legal right to choose their own union.entered into the arrangement with the “unlawful purpose” of frustrating another drive to formally unionize.
“Workers should define and decide what their union looks like and democratically elect their leaders — not the bosses,” said Jennifer Scott, president of Gig Workers United. The unfair labour practice complaint does not name UFCW as a respondent or make any allegations against the union.
