Bull runs may be a beloved spectacle for many Spaniards and the thousands who attend the nation's summer festivals, but this year's record-tying death toll has politicians and animal rights defenders heaping criticism on the events.

The shrieks of fear-infused excitement as bulls charge through the streets of many Spanish towns during summer festivals echo in sharp contrast to the number of people who have died after being gored this year.

Six men were fatally gored in other Valencia festivals and more than 380 participants have been injured.Despite the concern, authorities appear at a loss about what additional safety measures they can implement."Some people have lost any fear of the bull," regional emergency chief José María Angel said.

Valencia regional government Deputy President Aitana Mas left the door open to debate on whether to prohibit these kinds of fiestas, saying the current legislation was "not enough".The deaths of eight people have put Spain's popular summer festivals under scrutiny. "I hope our decision brings further into the streets the debate and leads to the end of this tradition," Mayor Sergi González said, even as he acknowledged the tradition's deep cultural roots.

There are hundreds of deaths every year during these events. What's 8 more?

Stop the barbaric sport simple as that.

I don't really see the problem at least the humans get a choice

“Authorities appear at a loss as to additional safety measures they can impose”. 1. Remove humans or 2. Remove bulls. Just a suggestion.

I've got no issues with the safety measures they currently have in place.

Honestly these people need to grow up. Talk about bad life choices.

There are good traditions steeped history in many cultures this is not one of them.

It’s hard to understand peoples lack of empathy for these poor tormented animals. The humans have an option of whether to participate. The bulls have no option whatsoever.

After so many years of abuse and torturous deaths suffered by bulls that have to endure this stupid, inhumane behaviour; authorities are only now concerned with high number of ‘participant’ deaths? Go figure 😒🙄

Fuck the 'participant deaths', I'm more concerned about the bulls. It's barbaric. Shame on spain

'Authorities appear at a loss about to what additional safety measures they can impose'...haha ...cut the fuckin horns off!!

Shame /s

Authoritys are at a loss as to how else to increase safety. Have they tried using cats instead?
