.ChantalHbert: U.S. drive to ban abortion just made it tougher for Canada’s Conservatives via torontostar

MONTREAL — Since the Supreme Court struck down the sections of the criminal code pertaining to abortion in 1988, the political history of the anti-abortion lobby in Canada is that of an unbroken losing streak.

Back in 1988, the court left the door open to the crafting of a Charter-compliant abortion law. And in the immediate aftermath of the decision, the majority of MPs agreed some form of legislation was in order. Since then, it has been nailed shut, in no small part because of Stephen Harper’s decision to commit a future Conservative government to not relitigate the issue.

Its battle against same-sex marriage was lost first in Parliament and eventually within the Conservative Party of Canada . The party renounced the exclusively heterosexual definition of marriage shortly after its 2015 election defeat. Paul Martin’s government had to be dragged to the altar of same-sex marriage, and only after having exhausted all legal avenues — including an extended Supreme Court reference — to delay the inevitable.

In the current campaign to find a successor for Erin O’Toole, the three main contenders are all on the record as supporters of abortion rights.

ChantalHbert Conservatives smarten up. If you want to ever win start working together and forget about the abortion issue. Most of conservatives against abortion are long past their date of procreation.

ChantalHbert We have our own views as a sovereign nation

ChantalHbert No it doesn’t. Conservatives are vastly pro choice and if there any more that aren’t, they won’t ever touch this issue with a barge pole.

ChantalHbert No, no it doesn’t. The continued attacks on Conservatives by a supposed non-partisan media is glaring. It’s well past time for the & it’s liberal_party pundits to be honest with Canadians & disclose exactly how much taxpayer $$ JustinTrudeau has given it.

ChantalHbert Abortion is murder and needs to be banned!

ChantalHbert TorontoStar No it didn’t.

ChantalHbert TorontoStar Never Conservative!

ChantalHbert TorontoStar It's made it tougher because the media circus is full steam a head on something they already pledge not to touch. Just like the past 3 elections: CPC:. We won't touch abortion Media: could the CPC take away you right to abortion?

ChantalHbert TorontoStar They follow GOP practices now, so they have to live by the consequences.

ChantalHbert TorontoStar Whaaat? That makes no sense at all. It is strictly an American issue. Horrible, Horrible take.

ChantalHbert TorontoStar People might actually look at the hurdles they intend to put in place? Because this piece went out of it way to avoid mentioning them All of those are on their Policy declaration

ChantalHbert TorontoStar ‘After Justin Trudeau declared he would require his caucus to toe the party line on abortion rights, the Conservative party became the only major federal home left open to the country’s abortion fighters.’
