The state’s redistricting board is considering its options after the Alaska Supreme Court ruled its first choice unconstitutional.

Alaska Redistricting Board member Budd Simpson photographed during a meeting in Anchorage on Nov. 5, 2021.

Either option would have major effects on this fall’s legislative elections. If AFFER’s plan is adopted, Sen. Lora Reinbold, R-Eagle River, would be placed in the same state Senate district as Sen. Roger Holland, R-Anchorage. Former Senate President Cathy Giessel, R-Anchorage, would be in the district too.

The board includes three Republicans and two nonpartisan members. Republican board members Budd Simpson and Bahnke were appointed to the board by Gov. Mike Dunleavy, and board chair John Binkley was appointed by Giessel. Binkley is the father of the owners of the Daily News.
