An anonymous donor has agreed to pay the city of Montgomery’s $25,000 fine for violating state law when it renamed Jefferson Davis Avenue in honor of civil rights attorney Fred Gray.which passed the state Legislature in 2017 and prohibits renaming buildings and streets with historical names -- including Confederate names and symbols -- that have been in place at least 40 years.
Mayor Steven Reed told the city council Tuesday that an anonymous donor stepped up to pay the fine and suggested the donor could pay subsequent fines as the city looks to rename other streets that may run afoul of the law, WSFAIn October, the city renamed Jefferson Davis Avenue for Gray, who represented civil rights icon Rosa Parks and grew up on the street.

Everybody knows what brought about this terrible controversial law. It's not serving the intended racist or conservative purpose. Thus, the law is basically useless....

There should be no fine. The next session of the AL legislators should work to repeal this law. What does the state use the fine for?

This is an absurd situation! The far right is in complete control of Alabama and from the looks of the campaign tv ads, we are looking to have the most extreme right wing government in the US.
