World No.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic will stay in Melbourne until Monday after launching a last-minute bid in the Federal Circuit Court to stop the federal government from deporting him before the Australian Open begins.in Australia and was sent to immigration detention at the Park Hotel in Carlton.Chris Hopkins, Getty Images
But the judge also warned that he would not be bound by Tennis Australia’s preference that the issue be resolved by Tuesday. Tournament organisers would need time to find a replacement player if Djokovic doesn’t compete.AdvertisementNick Wood, SC, for Djokovic, said he was open to discussions with authorities in an attempt to find a way for his client to play, but said resolving the visa dispute was the key.
According to the federal government, the approval for the visas was an automated process and it was always up to individuals to prove their vaccination status or valid exemptions on arrival. Border Force regularly turns away people who cannot meet their visa requirements. Djokovic and his support staff arrived at Melbourne Airport late on Wednesday night and left about 10am on Thursday. Shortly afterward, media gathered outside the Park Hotel in Carlton, the immigration facility where he is being detained.
The minister can give special exemption to stay and play the greatest tennis match of 2022. Djokovic vs Nadal, 21 open title record, huge economic injection in Australia. He won't have any affect on covid numbers that are already out of control.
Pretty simple, if ur not vaccinated dont come here, things are horrendous here at the moment with health system at breaking point, we dont need djoker or any other knobs here
Its time to go Novak. Did he expect royal treatment? Lol
Entry rules to Australia are very clear and no ones social standing should influence decisions or receive exemptions that others wouldn’t. If Novak can’t provide documentation to support his claims for which his Visa was first granted then he should leave, just like anyone else
Without Novak, it's a better-occupied satellite. I wonder to the sponsors that they did not cancel the investment
Muting you now. This story is so over killed.
I love this picture of him. Enjoy the summer in Melbourne at least.
Throw him out. If he is allowed to stay then that sets a precedent in Aus that unvaccinated people can do whatever they want. Is that the message the government wants to send out to Australia? If so, I will stop QR coding and wearing a a mask and blame the gov re Djokodick.
This no-vax fiasco is getting onto people's nerves.
money talks … bullshit walks
Entry rules to Australia are very clear, Tennis Australia has no jurisdiction on who comes in so their exemption is pointless. Sorry Novak, your social standing does not and should not grant you any privileges over and above that of others, same rules apply to all
At least someone has some common sense in this god forsaken country.
He will lose 💁🏻♀️
I would cancel the whole tournament! What is happening now is a disgusting policy that has nothing to do with sport!
Umpire's call?
Public Apology: 'To those who found my comment last night offensive, off-colour and more annoying then exploding haemorrhoids, I would like to sincerely offer........sincerely offer.....i think I'm having a mental block. Goodnight'
All BS! PenalColony Shows off! At the end of the saga Djokovic will stay and play CovidFascism Australia AusOpen
If this was Jeopardy! (pre-2020) ... 'you feel good and have no symptoms - - but visit the doctor daily for a check-up' ... what is hypochondriasis?
About 65,000 non Australians remain unlawfully in any one year so roughing up the Serbian tennis ace must be nice distraction for Border Force ?
newsaspect FreeDjokovic
Who's paying his hotel bills?
Let’s hope common sense prevails and he wins again
Absolutely ludicrous. It’s a rule, live by it and stopping using all your tax free Monaco money on lawyers - go home DjokerNole
