Melbourne researchers are investigating whether Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation could help treat people with obsessive compulsive disorder by "normalising" their brain activity.Doctors want to find out if magnetic stimulation can remedy OCD by altering brain activity
Coordinator of the study Oscar Murphy said researchers wanted to find out if the non-invasive procedure could help people where current psychological therapies and medications had not been effective.on ABC Radio Melbourne. "We place an electromagnetic coil just on the scalp, just above the brain region we want to target, and then we fire these magnetic pulses," Dr Murphy said.
OCD isn't a choice, it's a way the brain is wired, there is no philosophy around it. In theory the brain is quite adaptable, especially in humans, we are the dominant species due to adaptability, not intelligence, so should be possible to rewire, or coax to new/standard pathways.
Humans evolved mostly to a pre-industrial society, it means pretty much all of our genetics exist to serve predetermined functions, yet the modern world is rife with new kinds of stimuli, and these environmental cues trigger genetic activation. The brain is especially complex.
