The moment a 29-year-old Aboriginal woman was shot dead by a policeman on a suburban street has been shown to a court in the officer's Supreme Court murder trial in Perth. She was holding a knife but standing still when she was shot in the abdomenWARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised this article contains an image of a person who has died.
Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said at the time this was the first case in 93 years a Western Australian police officer had been charged with murder while in the line of duty. The court was told on the day of the fatal shooting she had also been forcibly removed from a local shopping centre and had tried to buy alcohol with a stolen bank card. She then went to the Wajarri community centre where she spoke to Raylene Clayton-Bonney before becoming quite distressed.
Ms Forrester said she then visited relatives and told a man she was staying with she had a premonition she would die that day before going across the road where she got in an argument with a woman. It was then police were called but while they responded to that call, another call came in, saying someone had been spotted by a member of the public carrying a large knife and walking down a suburban street. The court was shown CCTV footage from a house on Petchell Street of JC being shot.
An unfathomable response. I hope her family find justice and closure.
