The constitutional dilemma of deciding whether the municipal elections scheduled for next month would be free and fair, given fears around the spread of Covid-19, was placed in the hands of the apex court following an urgent application last month by the Electoral Commission of SA to have elections postponed to no later than February.
The EFF has been calling for the postponement of the elections since last year. The ANC has also been in favour of a postponement.Other formations such as the DA and the One SA Movement have welcomed the ruling. We also want to believe that many of the political parties, which have done splendid work in spreading awareness around Covid-19 in recent months, have internalised the messaging enough to be able to conduct their campaigns efficiently even under the cloud of a pandemic.
Although the spark of the riots that brought parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng to their knees in July was the arrest of former president Jacob Zuma, poverty and discontent around service delivery were other major factors, and the cause of almost daily protests around the country.
