Pet thieves could face tougher sentences under the government's plans to create a new criminal offence.

Currently, pets are legally classed as property, so when they're taken it's no different to a stolen bike or laptop.

Good but they shouldn’t just serve part of there time in prison they should serve the whole term and the sentences should be the same that if you kidnap a child

Better make any sentence mandatory and not up to the judge’s discretion as we all know what happens then .. SUSPENDED SENTENCE an ol favourite of theirs

This good news, pets are not just possessions they are family members & the sentence given for abduction should reflect this. Bring it on!

I welcome the new law because something has to protect pet and owner , this sounds like a good deterrent which was alway's needed 🐕 👍.

About time lock them up

Through experience, I truly believe that any/every pet should be tagged/chipped. I can appreciate not everyone agreeing to this. However..... some fucers robbed my carpet last year.😡

Pets are like family members, I would like to see some serious sentences for these types of offences. Kidnappers would return my pooch in a heartbeat, he's a nightmare but he's my best friend. I'm not into cats but I bet cat owners feel the same, they are family.

Pet theft is a terrible crime but it is possible for people’s intentions to be misconstrued when they assume that an animal is lost or abandoned and they take action to reunite it with its owner.
