Australia will temporarily avoid having the Great Barrier Reef listed as an endangered world heritage

UNESCO reiterated its belief the reef merited a place on the “in danger” list Friday, with the organization’s marine program head Dr. Fanny Douvere, saying: “The facts are the facts and the science is the science.

”until the next World Heritage Committee meeting in 2023 and Australia will send a progress report by February 2022, months earlier than the December 2022 deadline it had requested. Australia’s Environment Minister Sussan Ley, who led the lobbying campaign to pull votes away from UNESCO and criticized how the organization made its recommendation,
