A US federal judge dealt a fresh blow to an immigration programme protecting undocumented migrants brought to the country as children, ruling it unlawful and blocking the enrolment of new applicants

Instituted by former president Barack Obama in 2012, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals covers around 700,000 people known as Dreamers. For many, the US is the only country they have ever known.

The government must stop accepting people to the programme, he said, though he added it could still receive applications. Applicants must be in school or have a high school degree or equivalent, or have been honourably discharged from the military and have a clean criminal record. Since taking office, President Joe Biden has looked to strengthen the programme, as well as initiate wider immigration reform.
