At 21, Mateus Costa-Ribeiro will become one of the youngest people in recent decades to be admitted as a member of the New York state bar

Mateus Costa-Ribeiro has graduated from law school, won a case before Brazil’s highest court and completed a master’s degree from Harvard University, all while still under the legal drinking age.

Next Thursday, he will add to that list of precocious accomplishments, becoming one of the youngest people in recent decades to be admitted as a member of the New York state bar. At 21 years old, Mr. Costa-Ribeiro has cut a remarkable path, as law schools are generally encouraging students to begin later in life, when they have not only the knowledge but the maturity for a career that can involve multimillion-dollar lawsuits and alter the course of people’s lives.

Mr. Costa-Ribeiro said he brings a maturity beyond his years to his legal career. “The way you deal with a client, the way you explain a tough decision that came from a judge, the way you tell someone that he or she is going to jail, you need some kind of life backbone to be able to manage these situations,” he said.

Mr. Costa-Ribeiro, who grew up in Brazil’s capital of Brasília, said his path to the law began when he was 13 years old and his sister was taking the law-school admissions exam. His father, also a lawyer, encouraged his son to take the test, too. The boy got into law school but still had three more years of high school to complete. He ultimately petitioned a judge to take the final high-school exams when he was 14 years old.

Nothing seems to be holding him back!

I had a Professor in Law School that was teaching because he was not old enough (21) to be licensed as lawyer. At first I thought he was just a young looking student.

I have an ancestor that was granted the rare privilege to be admitted to the NY bar without taking the bar exam. WW1 intervened.
