The Supreme Court is taking up a case today that could totally reshape college sports. At its heart: How should student athletes be compensated?

It comes as college sports raise billions of dollars from ticket sales, television contracts and merchandise and supporters of the students say they are being exploited and barred from the opportunity to monetize their talents. In 2016, for example, the NCAA negotiated an eight-year extension of its broadcasting rights to March Madness, worth $1.1 billion annually.

In court papers, Andrew Pincus, arguing on behalf of the athletic conferences, cautioned that if the court affirms the lower court decision it will lead to a slippery slope of questionable spending not entirely related to education as well as a multitude of lawsuits.

It will be difficult to get a very conversation court to side with the athlete versus the money. They should receive compensation & expand scholarship rights beyond D1 & D2. Playing in college is difficult and any athlete at any level should be rewarded.

Do you pay soccer players the same as football players? What about swimming and diving? What about Title 9? Non-revenue generating athletes would soon see their sports canceled if the payments are the same. Not opposed the paying players but you are opening a big can of worms.

Great pic. Bravo to the photog!

Well if you remember College sports = a Business and the Student-Athletes = the Employees (not interns), it’s a real easy case. IMO.

They already are, it's called athletic scholarships

If money is made money should be paid.

And should starters be paid different and how do non scholarship players get compensated or do the athletes get value of scholarship in monthly stipends & then they pay for school? Seems complicated

They should be compensated based on the amount of revenue that their respective sports earn.

I personally know of several outstanding Div I athletes who struggled to pay for costs while in college and who now have thousands in student debt. It has been basically a Catch 22 situation.

My brother Sid was a incredible football player who eventually played pro. He had to borrow some money from his coach to take his girlfriend to lunch...probably a rules violation. Couldn't get a job because they worked out all the time.
