Mr Chauvin pleaded not guilty to the three charges laid against him which include second and third degree murder and second degree manslaughter. The second degree murder charge carries the heaviest penalty with a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. The prosecution took the court through the incident minute by minute from the arrest to the moment Mr Floyd lost consciousness.
In his opening argument attorney Jerry Blackwell accused the officer of using “lethal force” against the 46 year old who he argued was “defenseless, handcuffed and not resisting”. Derek Chauvin's defence attorney Eric Nelson offered a different explanation and pointed out there were many factors involved. He said Mr Floyd did not cooperate with officers and put drugs in his mouth when they approached him.
