The judge overseeing the trial of a former Minneapolis police officer in the death of George Floyd said that he’ll allow the jury to hear some evidence about a prior arrest in which Floyd was found with drugs.

In this image from video, defendant and former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, right, listens as Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill presides over pretrial motions before jury selection Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at the Hennepin County Courthouse in Minneapolis. Chauvin is charged in the May 25, 2020 death of George Floyd.

Chauvin’s attorney, Eric Nelson, called the timing of the settlement deeply disturbing and unfair, and said it jeopardized Chauvin’s chance for a fair trial. Opening statements are March 29 if the jury is complete. That process was on track to finish nearly a week early despite news that theFormer officer Derek Chauvin is charged with murder and manslaughter in the May 25 death of Floyd, a Black man who was declared dead after Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee against his neck for

Prosecutor Matthew Frank said the defense was simply looking for a backdoor way to portray Floyd as a bad person, and the only relevant issue in Floyd’s death is how he was treated by police.

Why it's not relevant?

Boy they're trying like hell to get that murdering sack of shit off 😡.

Relevance?

If the officer and floyd had a past of run ins, bring all that out.

Same judge:

JonLemire The prior arrest is not relevant. Such evidence would only be prejudicial and is not probative. As I recall the rules of evidence, it would therefore be of zero weight. It should not be allowed.

Bullshit ruling.

Why? Chauvin is the one on trial. Not like that would excuse killing a man over a potential fake $20 bill. JusticeForGeorgeFloyd

What does prior arrest have to do with murder at hand?! Clearly the judge has his head buried in sand. GeorgeFloydMurder Minneapolis

Then the jury also needs to hear EVERY SINGLE COMPLAINT AGAINST THE OFFICER.

He needs a change of venue

if chauvin could kill a co worker then he would have no problem planting evidence

When Rush Limbaugh was hooked on Oxycontin he was allowed to keep his show & make tens of millions of $$. Oh the differing standards for different people.

JonLemire Knee to the neck . Lean on w hands in pocket Full body weight on his neck .Died of asphyxiation . He is a murderer . Fun trip to jail for him .

Let the jurors hear testimony from the officers wife about his abusive behavior.

JonLemire Prejudicial. Irrelevant.

What does that have to do with anything?

That dude LOVED kneeling on his neck while the crowd tried to talk him down! And you cannot cover that up in the video. He was as smug as could be. Loved it.

That is irrelevant. This was murder.

Wow.. Just wow.. Putting George Floyd on trial from the grave. Man this judicial system is racist AF ...

It doesn’t matter if George Floyd was found with a boatload of drugs.... That cop killed him. Plain & simple.

The judge concerned with this trial should be removed forthwith. He is not fit to serve his community with such bias. He is clearly a racist.

No way will he get a fair trial in that state. They know this is what will happen to their cities if he's found inocente. This is Minneapolis after liberal destroyed it.

George Floyd is not on trial, prior arrests in which he was found with drugs don't have anything to do with whether Derek Chauvin is guilty of murdering him. Has Chauvin been involved in deaths before, or had excessive force complaints lodged against him? That IS relevant.

Can the defense be granted permission to kneel on the judge's neck until such time as his honor decides is appropriate for a nonviolent drug charge?

Blooded murderer. One's character is about to be assassinated even after deaf. While excuses out the ass for the others behavior.whats wrong with this picture

Let me see george floyd gets pulled over by police ends up executed in public while cop knells on his neck.White male walks in sex palor more than one kills eight people in cold blood and oh he had a bad day,he was addicted to sex, mental issues. Anything except he was a cold

How is a prior drug arrest relevant?

So what if Floyd was arrested once for drugs? Does that warrant the officer to kneel on his neck and kill him? The bottom line is that that was murder..all that is needed is justice so the other police officers don't do it again and get away with it...WhiteSupremacy

Keep in mind that Mr. Floyd said several times that he 'Can't Breathe' before he was even on the ground! Meanwhile, he had dangerous levels of FENTANYL in his body and he had a history of heart disease. Those are FACTS not opinions.

If there is even a slight possibility that Mr. Floyd could've died because of a heart attack, drug overdose, etc. Then Mr. Chauvin is innocent. The state has to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Floyd's airway was compromised by Mr. Chauvin & died because of this.

This yt judge is bias and needs to be removed ASAP. He’s setting the stage for yt jurors to find DerekChauvin not guilty. This case isn’t a drug related matter, past drug issues are irrelevant. ChauvinTrial

I love it how all you clowns are smarter & know more than judge Cahill about the law & courts. This is all about getting a fair trial & about assuming someone is INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty. Perhaps you've forgotten about that?

If the man used drugs, it still does NOT make it ok to kill him in the street!!! Who are you people? Have you no empathy in your hearts? You must have done some big stuff to be sitting on that ‘high horse’!!! You know what, God won’t care...you will be judged.

This is bizarre. The info has no bearing on the actions of the defendant. Classic smear the victim. I have lost all faith in this trial regardless of its outcome, it's now rigged. No, not conspiracy theory, bad law.

Floyd's drug use is irrelevant to the defendant's actions.

Not relevant.

So this judge is willing to reduce George Floyd's 💀 to a drug dealer's. I got the message.

Forget GF, what’s prominent in everyone’s face are Asian hate crimes & sexual violence. It happens to other races as well.

Here we go - can they bring the officers past complaints

This now opens the door for the prosecution to utilize Chauvins prior arrest excessive force complaints him.

WTF does priors have to do with you kneeling on my neck for over 8 minutes and killing me Asking for a friend.....

Let's try to dirty him up by using his past to beat the charge of killing him, they use the same playbook everytime.

How is that related to his death? This is bull shit.

And this is why I am glad the family got their money

How’s that information relevant to the case? How can they now ensure that the jury hearing about prior drug possession will not prejudice them against the victim and the prosecution’s case?

You do not get a death sentence for having drugs on you!

SusanFlores7762 Does his prior drug use make it ok to murder him in the street? Drugs = Death Sentence? What is judge thinking? Besmirch the vic?

The world is watching, America.

We all saw the murder. It's not about drug dealing . It's about a man hand cuffed being knelt on and the last living breath as this cop kills this human being and the sleying of a defenceless person whilst colleagues watched this man die. They are also culpable.

Just declare a mistrial. We all know he'll be acquitted.

JonLemire Will the judge also allow jurors to hear Chauvin's disciplinary record?

Where is the omnipotent look on his face that he sported on George’s last day

Who cares.

Bad Choices, Bad Results, Pay Dearly for a Long Time! Consequences!

Prior arrests are irrelevant here. More slander to justice another police murder

Fine but again this has no bearing over his death. George Floyd needs justice!!

George would not cooperate with police. Consequences visited.

How is that relevant at all...makes no sense

WHY!?

Oh so the drugs are why he was killed on the scene, got it. SMH.

Definitely looks like a peice of shot

The appellate court will have something to say about that

Why I read this and the question is why about George Floyd and his drug use. This effing piece of information has nothing to do with the fact that that POS cop had his knee on the man's neck for 9 minutes with a shity almost grin on his face and Pricks bearing down on his chest

The CCP dictator specially arranged for a judge to try two Canadian citizens in these two days! In order to increase the bargaining chip of Sino-US dialogue! The law is a tool used by the CCP dictator! In China, the courts function under the command of CCP officials!

But, it's not like his past arrest was a factor in, that Animal Police officer, sitting on George Floyd's neck? It's a fact that, white police don't respect Black people, at all.

How is a previous drug charge relevant to the manner in which George Floyd was arrested/killed over an alleged fake $20 bill on May 25, 2020? Isn't that what this hearing will be about? Is Chauvin using that as an excuse of why he felt threatened?

He’s going free. Get ready for the riots

BuddhaWorship It is not a police officer's job to decide guilt and then administer the death penalty. When a police officer does that, he is guilty of murder.

Why? To taint the victim? None of that is relevant to why George Floyd was brutally tortured to death.

His prior arrest didn’t justify his murder !

He did beg for his life. For 9 minutes. Bastards!

This is what the war on drugs was always about - giving the cops an excuse.

Wondering how his past relates to the neck kneeling. The officer’s past, maybe, but not Floyd’s.

This is beyond vile and it will blow up in this judge’s face

I don’t care if he had drugs in his system, in his car, underneath his fingernails or even if it was stuffed between the cheeks. As a civil servant you are being paid to help people, not kill unless you’re about to be killed. He tortured that man for 9 minutes straight.

What would that possibly have to do with this?

Cringe

They are trying to make George Floyd the bad guy and their defense will be, he deserved to be killed by the police. The entire world saw the murder live on TV.

If this is true, then I hope they will allow the officer's history of racism and excessive force in as evidence too.

The issue revolves around how Floyd lost his life by the hand of the police officer and not about the prior arrests of the victim.

This is tainted already.

So, because a black man was arrested with drugs once, it is legal to kneel in his neck and kill him for no particular reason whatsoever? What exactly is the purpose of this allegation other than to grossly attempt to justify what is criminal conduct on behalf of the police.

How is that related to his murder?

If diabetes causes racism, I guess one could expect one's prior drug use to cause a cop to murder you. What a joke.

If the judge is gonna let the jury hear about Floyd’s past, then the jury also needs to hear that this isn’t the first time Chauvin has been involved in killing a citizen while on duty.

Cool so they’re going to say he had a different interaction with police so therefore it was ok to murder him. Fuck the police.

Wish the judge & police officers would have felt George Floyd was 'having a bad day.' Well since George Floyd didn't actually murder multiple people, I guess he should have been viewed as having a whatever is less than having a bad day and been apprehended instead of murdered.

NoJusticeNoPeace

Which Chauvin had no clue about but I’m sure they won’t allow the defense to show how he’s killed FIVE people.

The police mafia gonna win again huh? How many innocent people(black men) has he killed? How many more will he after he gets off free and transfers?

What does his priors have to do with his murder?

their argument will be that floyd died of a drug overdose and that the neck kneel chauvin used was/is standard police protocol and is used in many police departments across the country to incapacitate suspects, and so chauvin did nothing wrong.

JonLemire Supremely disappointing.

This might set a precedent for inclusion of the officer's record, which I believe is extensive.

But Floyd isn't on trial here. I don't care how horrendous Floyds behavior was in the past it doesn't give police license to kill.

Ah, I see we are picking the “typical outcome” scenario again. Par for the course.

**some** 🤔

Because possessing drugs is a valid reason to suffocate another human by kneeling on his NECK for nine solid minutes. That cop is a murderer.

Relevance?

Everyone is on bullshit. You for not correctly identifying this as a Derek Chauvin trial. And the judge for putting George Floyd on trial.

I feel like that is irrelevant when it's not George Floyd who is on trial. And possession does not make anyone an addict. Or even a user.

What does that have to do with him having his neck stomped out for 8-9 minutes on live recording ? Lol am I crazy to say that this always happens to black people ?

Oh, well being arrested for drugs totally warrants being murdered. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

just because he was found with drugs in a prior arrest doesn’t give police the right to pin him to the ground with a knee on his neck for 8 minutes. he wasn’t found with drugs on this arrest was he? Don’t think it’s relevant to this case but shouldn’t make difference.

Judge attempting to bias the jury.

Will the judge also allow prior evidence of any disciplinary issues the officer may have had?

White supremacists have all the cards in their favor.

Here we go with attacking his character to make it seem like the cop could rightfully murder him 🤦‍♂️

If Floyd had drugs on him worth the equivalent of the US GDP, that still doesn't justify his death.

And it starts....

Who cares?!! That still does not constitute a murder in cold blood on the street by uniformed cops!!! Let me guess, dude had some weed...that’s real scary...whatever. The man was murdered in front of our eyes! Does not matter what happened in the past!

That is total non-relevant to the case at hand bullshit.

Judge is trash, past has NO bearing If the past does have bearing then NO mass-shooters would be alive.

Yeah I don’t know how that pertains to this case but it’s typical bullshit

JonLemire Of course, kick a dead man's family!

Judge limits evidence, refuses to move trial in Floyd deathA judge has denied a defense request to delay or move the trial of a former Minneapolis police officer charged in George Floyd’s death, and has limited evidence involving a 2019 arrest If you are able, please help share this campaign. It would be great to get the attention Drug overdose I'd like to see the officer convicted but I'll leave that up to the jury. Judge declines to move or delay Derek Chauvin trial after Minneapolis settles with Floyd familyThe trial of former Minneapolis Police Department officer Derek Chauvin for the killing of George Floyd will continue in Minneapolis as scheduled, despite concerns over pre-trial publicity, Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill ruled Friday. Driving the news: Chauvin's attorney had asked the judge to postpone or move the trial following last Friday's announcement that the city of Minneapolis reached a $27 million civil settlement with Floyd's family. Stay on top of the latest market trends and economic insights with Axios Markets. Subscribe for freeDefense attorney Eric Nelson argued he was 'gravely concerned' that news coverage of the record payout had 'incredible potential to taint the jury pool.' What he's saying: Cahill said while he's frustrated by the timing of the city's announcement, 'unfortunately, I think the pre-trial publicity in this case will continue no matter how long we continue it.' He said a change of venue would not 'give the defendant any kind of fair trial beyond what we are doing here today.''I don't think there's any place in the state of Minnesota that has not been subjected to extreme amounts of publicity in this case.'The big picture: A move or delay would have upended one of the world's most closely watched trials, two weeks into the jury selection process. City and state officials have spent months — and millions of dollars — to lock down the area surrounding the downtown courtroom amid concerns about large crowds and civil unrest. Between the lines: Some experts say the settlement news could be grounds for an eventual appeal or mistrial from Chauvin's defense. What's next: Jury selection continues ahead of opening statements on May 29.
