The judge in the trial of a former Minneapolis police officer accused of murder in the death of George Floyd denied a defense request to move the trial over the city’s announcement ofEric Nelson, attorney for former officer Derek Chauvin, on Monday said he was “gravely concerned” about the March 12 announcement tainting potential jurors in reviving his motion for a change of venue. Jury selection began March 9.
On Wednesday, Judge Peter Cahill, who is presiding over the case, dismissed two seated jurors who had heard the news of the settlement last week and felt that they could no longer be fair and impartial to the defendant. After those dismissals, attorneys were able to seat five new jurors Wednesday and Thursday, bringing the total to 12 jurors seated. The judge expects to seat 12 jurors plus two alternates.
“I don’t think there’s any place in the state of Minnesota that has not been exposed to extreme amounts of publicity on this case,” Judge Cahill said.
