EXCLUSIVE: A growing majority of people in Hong Kong support the pro-democracy movement's goals after China introduced a national security law for the city, but only 44% backed the protest movement, a Reuters survey showed

- A growing majority of people in Hong Kong support the pro-democracy movement’s goals after China introduced a national security law for the city, but backing for the protest movement was a smaller 44%, a survey conducted for Reuters showed.

It found nearly 60% of people were opposed to the security law, up from about 57% in HKPORI's previous survey in June, when few of the details were known. Police said they had arrested 25 people, as of August 20, including protesters, activists and a media tycoon under the new law, which makes crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces punishable with up to life in prison.

The latest survey asked: How much do you support or oppose the pro-democracy protest movement? The responses showed support at about 44%. The police did not respond to a request to comment on the level of public support for an independent inquiry. Lam remains unpopular with 58% of respondents saying she should resign, little changed from the June poll. Nevertheless, that’s an improvement over perceptions in March, when 63% of respondents said she should resign. The survey also showed that support for the idea of Hong Kong independence, which is anathema to Beijing and a focal point of the new legislation, remained at about 20% while opposition to independence hovered slightly below 60%.

The survey shows that support for pro-democracy movement stands at 44%, compared to a previous 51% support for the now-defunct anti-extradition bill movement. 44%! Not quite the majority it seems....

HKers will never surrender. We fight in our own creative ways, not necessarily in mass protests. If you can see that CCPChina's suppression of HK's freedom is ugly and outrageous, boycott everything made in China to support freedom & democracy.

The protests become ugly.

HongKong is an integral part of China 🇨🇳

The hk gov’s acts of intimidation will not diminish Hong Kongers’ desire for freedom, democracy and autonomy. StandWithHongKong FreeHongKong

44% isn't a low percentage when compared with that of supporting the Gov. In fact, many HKers are afraid of revealing their pro democracy stance as the draconian NSL criminalizes the advocacy of freedom. Jimmy Lai was arrested due to his explicit political stance.

44% support is already high for a social movement, even under the const threat by the regime to arrest everyone opposing the government Not to mention that the movement has evolved into more multifaceted than merely street protest It’s more than just protest, but our way of life

They are ruining HK, not the mainland.

I don know y u still pick 44% 4ur headline, u alrdy said the survey culd b a bit confus'g 2 lead 2 the drop. 🤨 👉✴Support 4 the request 4an independent commission of inquiry to look into how police handled the demonstrations saw a rise of roughly 4 percentage points to 70%.

If you have a puppet government which arbitrarily arrested people fighting for democracy, 44% is an abnormally high ratio of support for protest. The angle which Reuters chose for the heading is too obviously misleading.

Quite a misleading narrative. How can you come up with the percentage while HongKong is still under social distancing restricitions? The movement had not died down but in many ways developing. In 2020, protest does not need to be on the street so as a war does not need bombs.

Many factors are accountable for the response, the pandemic, the increased level of police violence and white terror. The movement has shifted to using other means such as YellowEconomicCircle. But still 44% supporting protests is significantly larger than the 33% against.

The key word is “protest”, which is seen as the physical activities that are infeasible now due to NationalSecurityLaw and often disproportionate HKPoliceBrutality, hence the slight drop. The increase % of requesting independent probe shows people still firmly want justice.

Good

sponge_lazy We all need time to change ourselves Further, facing endless HKPoliceBrutality and tyranny CCP,I could get it why some of us could have different opinions toward protests movement

According to the Basic Law Hong Kong should legislate its own national security law. But thanks to the so-called pro democracy group, for 23 yrs Hong Kong has failed the Basic Law on this issue. If you don’t obey the law how are you gonna establish democracy

Well don’t worry I am sure something short of revolution will change the agenda of what is an effectively dictatorial, oligarchy with capitalist tendencies, happens all the time. Revolution will return.

Sir, we are an Egyptian family applying for asylum in Malaysia and we are suffering from being chased by the Malaysian police with incitement and bribery from Arab businessmen. I made a report against the corrupt police and businessmen and submitted it to the UNHCR not help Help

Normally I would support people protesting tyranny, but since Trump supports them and they support Trump, I cannot, and I would like China to crush them, since China is on the side of the democrats, and winning is all that matters.

No one would want to live under Communist China rule. They (Chinese rulers) are heartless - with no respect for life.

If pro-war western medias label some groups 'pro-democracy ', replacing it with 'pro-west-imperism' will get you more close to the truth .

I don't think it works that way.

Lol most Chinese are probably scared to poll against their government

When you live in fear of the government would you answer a survey honestly, or would you save yourself the jail time ?

Meanwhile California has zero freedom, we are at the mercy of dictator Newsom
