Australian research appears to be ‘harvested’ by the Chinese state | Sky News AustraliaLiberal MP Andrew Hastie says Australia may be indirectly funding university research which goes to Chinese military and AI developments.\n\nSky News host Sharri Markson revealed on her Sunday night program that the Chinese government is recruiting Australian scientists and academics to a secretive research program called the Thousand Talents Plan by offering lucrative incentives. \n \nThe program obliges its recruits to abide by Chinese law and religious practice and requires their inventions be patented in China, but offered recruits profitable salaries and additional perks.\n \nThe Chinese Government had managed to recruit an estimated 7,000 people globally under the Thousand Talents Plan. \n\nMr Hastie said the Australian government provides the National Research Council close to $780 million per annum.\n\nHe said these recent revelations add to concerns around whether the money is used by universities and scientists to advance Australia’s national interests or not.\n\n“Their intellectual property, their research is harvested – it appears – by the Chinese state,” Mr Hastie said.\n\n“We might be indirectly funding programs that go to military developments in China, developments in artificial intelligence which could be used to enhance the unblinking eye of the Chinese surveillance state.”\n\nImage: AP Yep.
