KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court was told that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak knew about the “manipulation” of his bank accounts back in 2016 but waited until his trial in 2019 to act against the bank and his former bank relationship manager.

Lawyer Datuk Dr Gurdial Singh Nijar, who is representing Joanna Yu, rebutted Najib’s contention that the lawsuit against his client and her former employer had nothing to do with the recently concluded SRC International Sdn Bhd trial where Najib had been convicted of seven charges relating to the misappropriation of RM42mil from the company’s funds.

They were sued by the Pekan MP over alleged mismanagement of his bank accounts that were central in the SRC International trial, where Yu took the stand as a prosecution witness. Najib’s lawyer Harvinderjit Singh, in his reply, said the only reason the lawsuit was filed now was because his client found out about the bank’s contravention during the trial.

According to the statement of claim, the plaintiff contended that AmBank and Yu had committed negligence when handling his bank accounts by disclosing these to fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or better known as Jho Low. Najib claimed that he had been kept in the dark about the details of his own bank accounts statements and other related documents by the bank under Low’s instruction.
