Gardai did not disclose if the taxi driver was on duty and if there were any passengers inside

The driver of the car failed the road side breath test when stopped in Terenure and was subsequently arrested.A garda spokesperson said: "Taxi driver arrested at MIT Checkpoint in Rathfarnham by Terenure Roads Policing Unit having 'failed' road side breath test. Investigation ongoing. Never ever drive while intoxicated."

Officers were out in force at the Bank Holiday weekend clamping down on drivers under the influence of drink or drugs after a sharp rise this year. It is totally unacceptable to drive if you have been drinking or taking drugs.

"This selfish action endangers the lives of all road users, so we are very concerned by the significant increase in the number of Drug-Driving arrests so far this year. In the first six months of 2020, a total of 1,216 people have been arrested for drug-driving. This is a 106% increase in arrests compared to last year."
