ANALYSIS: 'The extradition law on steroids': China taking revenge on Hong Kong a year after defiant protests

Almost one year to the day when thousands of young protesters smashed their way into Hong Kong's local government building over plans for closer legal integration with mainland China, Beijing is moving to finalise a law far more expansive and restrictive.

China's Government is set to approve a new national security law which, according to media reports, could lead to protesters and political figures being jailed for life if they're deemed to be subverting Communist Party rule or promoting Hong Kong independence. Protesters deemed to be taking part in terrorism or colluding with foreign forces will now also be the target of a secretive state security branch set up in the city and overseen directly by China's Government.

Despite assurances Hong Kong will retain its separate legal system, reports say only Chinese judges approved indirectly by Beijing will be permitted to preside over national security cases.WatchRiot police use pepper spray to disperse activists in the streets of Hong Kong as China's National People's Congress begins.Chinese authorities have confirmed a new national security bureau will be established in the city that will bypass Hong Kong's Government and answer directly to Beijing.

Revenge, it is a right word

When CCPChina and HK Gov't constantly tramples on and insults what HongKongers cherish most, you choose to explain to them, they completely ignores it; you choose to resist, they sees it as provocation & riot. If this is not a dictatorship hegemony, what can it be called?

Apart from NationalSecurityLaw, China uses HKPolice to harm civilians HKPoliceBruality. These are CCP's revenge to HKers. Trying to kill the people who have raised question to her autocratic ruling HKprotests but not to solve a problem. It's CCP style tyranny. BoycottChina

Thanks for the brilliant article that explains how an absurd country that imposes an absurd law that almost nobody has read. The nationalsecuritylaw may be a revenge, but it is also a weapon of self destruction.

Not really a revenge, but the CCP_is_terrorist always wants to destroy Hong Kong. Now they did it. StandWithHongKong

So true! CCP and the gov just use PoliceBrutality to stop ppl to say, they just want to pass NationalSecurityLaw ! But it is actually harming the international financial centre role of HongKong

This is not a revenge, it is a plan by CCP since its takeover in HongKong . There is no way that CCP can allow HongKong operate differently with other mainland cities. In long term, HongKong will still be marginalized. But just this happen sooner than we all expect!

Revenge also comes from arrogance. That’s why CCPChina disrespects any international treaty or commitment to Hong Kong more. HKprotests NationalSecurityLaw
