Coalition against the rails on what to do with Federal Court's live export ruling

The Coalition has spent nine years lambasting Federal Labor for its "knee-jerk" decision to ban the live cattle trade to Indonesia in 2011., but the Coalition is not cheering. In fact, it appears to be looking for a narrative to justify an appeal.The biggest question in northern Australia's cattle industry right now, and one that appears to be splitting the ranks of the Coalition, is whether the Government will appeal the Federal Court's historic live export ruling or not.

When asked about the Senate result, Attorney-General Christian Porter said he was taking his time to better understand the ruling and the potential implications of the decision."In my observation this decision very much changes the standard by which a minister's decision could be made invalid," he said.

NT cattle producer and former president of the NT Cattlemen's Association, Tom Stockwell, said the Attorney-General's comments were odd. Mr Stockwell said he hoped the Federal Court's ruling would set a benchmark for ministers, and that decisions in the future would be made with "better consideration and better process, regardless of whether its pro or anti a particular cause."

Mr Thorne said it was clear the Coalition was concerned about the ramifications of the ruling for ministerial decision-making going forward, but questioned the Attorney General's claims the ruling could "be weaponised".

'We are a Government that fully supports live export. ' Public opinion has little impact against the might of its backers. Australia, to its shame, is a sell out.
