U-turn was the result of consultations, co-operative governance minister says in court papers

As the government faces an unprecedented level of legal challenges to its Covid-19 shutdown regulations, co-operative governance minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has strongly defended the state’s disputed decision to continue its cigarette ban and denied any suggestion that she and President Cyril Ramaphosa were “at odds” over it.

On why Ramaphosa initially made that announcement she states in her court papers: “My understanding is that the president made this statement based on the view that the NCCC [National Coronavirus Command Council] had taken on the issue at the time”. Lubisi states in court papers that the disclosure of these minutes “during this time of crisis would seriously jeopardise the government’s decision-making processes and as a result the management of the national state of disaster as a whole”.

The Fita case is not the only one where the government and the NCCC are being asked to explain their functioning in the time of the Covid-19 crisis, or defend the legality of their decisions.

If the cigarette sales taking place now are illegal how come no people are arrested? Covid_19 StaySafeSA

Why is the command council so reluctant to go to court?🤔🤔

fita_sa 'is “not urgent” and should only be heard in the week of June 9'... “during this time of crisis would seriously jeopardise the government’s decision-making processes and as a result the management of the national state of disaster as a whole”. ie: there is no process🤣

The regulations literally regulated the tobacco and liquor markets, thereby creating a nice monopoly for the criminals. Liquor and cigarettes are freely available at a price.

You're wasting your Minister, clever blacks and whites have been captured by drug dealers to stop at nothing, including this bogus mefia outlets, hauling insults you.

Tell us another one NDZ. Your credibility was lost some time ago.

THERE WAS SOMETHING SINISTER IN TOBACCO BAN,WHAT IS EVEN SINISTER IS THE CONTINUATION OF BAN,AFTER SEEING YOU WITH MAZZOTTI THE TOBACCO SMUGGLER,THAT IS EVE MORE SINISTER.

What is the point of working at home when the manufactured product cant be exported via courier services or the Post Office? No thought put into restrictions! Open up couriers & Postal Services for exports!

The THIRD REITCH

If you have nothing to hide why defend it? Even to the media?

Joke of the century

Deliberate obfuscation? The issue is whether the ban is helpful in controlling the spread of the virus. Nothing more. So far, nothing suggests that it is.

Obviously she would say that. Did you think she was going to say there was something sinister in the decision?

Shall we ask Mazzotti?

Nothing sinister like dictatorship actions? Of course not, we all stupid?

Invest your money well so at your old age you can retire.

Try the next line DlaminiZuma, this one isn't working... If you and the government refuse to make public to the people you are supposed to serve, your decision-making process, there must be something sinister. Remember, you serve the people not the other way around

In fact tobacco must be banned for good in SA. Whoever is not happy can go to Australia 😨

FAIRY TALES

Cigarettes kills

GovernmentZA Show us the minutes of the meetings!! Where is the 'transparency' CyrilRamaphosa !!

YES THERE WAS!!! DlaminiZuma by not releasing information of public interest to the public, in a democracy, that would be considered “sinister”. When can we see your meeting minutes to know the truth and actually educate ourselves rather than eat your drivel?

Nothing sinister? Just dumb? Irrational?

Well thank you for clarifying that for us all... Much appreciated
