Legal actions to unban tobacco continue and are 'at a very crucial point', as discussions between government and tobacco stakeholders provide some relief with the manufacture & export of tobacco products allowed.

The Fair-trade Independent Tobacco Association is happy with the concession by government to allow its members to manufacture and export tobacco products after it went to court over the ban of tobacco sales in South Africa during the lockdown to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Mnguni told City Press this week that the decision to allow the exports was a result of ongoing negotiations with government. “We made our court application on Monday morning and on Thursday we received a notice of the intention to oppose it. There has also been correspondence with the parties, but, for now, I am not at liberty to disclose anything. The matter is at a very crucial point.”

The exporters include Afroberg Tobacco Manufacturing, Best Tobacco Company, Carnilinx Tobacco Company, Folha Manufacturers, Gold Leaf Tobacco Corporation, Protobac and Home of Cut Rag. They were instructed to do all the manufacturing and transporting of products under strict health protocols. The association demanded that the court force Ramaphosa and Dlamini-Zuma to explain government’s U-turn on cigarettes sales. Fita gave government until May 19 to provide it with minutes and records of the meetings of the National Coronavirus Command Council , where the decision was made.

If they succeeded, and prove this banning unreasonable. The ANC government could be sued for loss of revenue.

Another joke not so funny... Profit driven motive

The air still smells of cigarettes I wonder how and why when cigarettes are banned

I wish for them to fail in court and cigarettes stay banned

Hold on miss Nkosazana. Great work. Smokers are selfish creatures. It is a stinking habit. Let them suffer for a few months more.

Government could face another legal challenge to lockdown regulationsAttorneys for civil rights group DearSA have written a letter to co-operative governance minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma challenging the ban on online retailing and the limitation on the hours people are allowed to exercise outside their homes. The other race is really starting to become a nuisance now. Everyone is equal here but bona they want special treatment all the time. Sure it’s challenging the exercise thing for all South Africans, one doesn’t have to exercise if they don’t won’t to. It’s giving more choice to everyone People got assaulted by the soldiers and people were starving & had their food parcels looted & there were no letters .. now that their privilege is being threatened, their booze and cigarette stocks are running low they start sending these annoying letters.. screw them
