Attorney General William Barr waves as he walks on stage to speak at the National Sheriffs' Association Winter Legislative and Technology Conference in Washington, Monday, Feb. 10, 2020.
Some cities, like New York, have put laws in place that prohibit the sharing of information with immigration officials. Immigration officials have sent subpoenas to Denver and New York City over requests for information on immigrants about to be released from jail. In New York, Homeland Security suspended “trusted traveler” programs that speed their re-entry into the U.S. over a law that prohibits state officials from sharing motor vehicle data with immigration officers.
Trump has been trying since he took office to punish sanctuary cities. In 2017 Jeff Sessions, then attorney general, said such cities would not receive grant money unless they gave federal immigration authorities access to jails and provide advance notice when someone in the country illegally is about to be released from prison. A federal judge blocked the punishment from being enforced, and the cities got the money.
In the run-up to the messaging campaign, a directive from Justice headquarters encouraging “robust local media engagement from every district” caused unease among some public affairs officials in the U.S. attorneys’ offices, according interviews and to correspondence reviewed by The Associated Press.
I.agree
I am for immigration but, I do think these states are wrong in not allowing the law to do what they are supposed to do.
About time! Cities and states not enforcing Federal laws because they don't like them? Protecting illegal immigrants only perpetuates the problem, it does not solve it. The House of Impeachment may help if they can find the time...
Way too many conservatives misunderstand this issue. 1, *NO* states are violating the law. 2. Sanctuary cities are *NOT* illegal. This is why the Trump admin is going after federal funding for states/cities -- because they can't prosecute anybody because no laws are broken.
AMEN. RAID THE DMV!!!!
About damn time.
'The stated mission of the DOJ is to: Enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law. Ensure public safety against threats both foreign and domestic. Provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime.' DOJ 😶
LUNATIC IN CHIEF ! IT KNOWS A RAT WHEN IT SEES ONE !
Good. Tighten the screws on these lawbreaking states. Until they obey and enforce Federal law and cooperate with Federal law enforcement they should feel the full weight of the Justice Department and the courts. It’s ridiculous this has been allowed to go on this long.
GOOD!! It's about time someone thought about the US citizens SAFETY !!
Good.
SCREW them, we all AREN'T afraid of difference.
Manage through the governors! This administration was committed to smaller government. Get out of our pockets.
Good. It's time cities and states learned who has the power when it comes to immigration policy. They've been getting cocky with these policies that try to tell the government what to do.
