Scott Morrison has announced he will be proposing a national inquiry, possibly a royal commission, into the current bushfire crisis. This can be welcomed with cautious optimism. A national catastrophe requires a national response, as amply illustrated by the nature of the fires themselves, which have transcended state borders and the capacity of our state-based fire-management systems to respond to them.
None has grappled fully with the prospect of adaptation to a world transformed by heat, drought and fire under climate change. There must be an analysis of losses and transformations to ecosystems, species and environmental services produced by these fires, including the ability of agencies to measure, evaluate and respond to these impacts. The overall successes and failures in our planning, preparedness and response must be honestly evaluated, including the resourcing, funding and structure of fire and land-management institutions.
Such a task force needs the time, funding and independence to support the work of the inquiry and to objectively evaluate the wealth of information and ideas that stem not only from this crisis but similar experiences before and elsewhere.
An enquirey of the people is the only way.
the inquiry is just to buy times till his polling is up or till the next election Slimy politicians splash money to detract n obfuscate to placate
Drip torch trail
Royal commission references will prevent any real look at climate change. It will be a ScoMo (Mr Coal) white wash.
It’s definitely been a baptism ...
Will it include a forensic analysis of how much was known about the upcoming season and what decisions were made to prepare for it and hold people to account if appropriate?
So in other words if it fails to show it was climate change then you're already setting up the but they didn't do it properly narrative. Just like the rwnj who couldn't accept the findings that halal wasn't evil. You're all cut from the same cloth.
